Frequently Asked Questions

What is hypnosis/hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is a heightened state of focus and suggestibility in which the body and conscious mind are in a naturally relaxed state while the unconscious mind remains very alert and receptive to positive suggestions for change.

We enter into states of hypnosis (trance) every day. Have you ever stared into space, thinking of nothing, and been unaware of the passage of time? Or perhaps you’ve driven home only to realise once at your destination you can’t recall passing familiar landmarks? It’s as if you were on auto-pilot. Listening to music, reading a booking, being in “your zone” whilst exercising are all forms of hypnosis.

Hypnotherapy is a safe and effective proven therapeutic process in which hypnosis is used to create a state of focused attention and increased suggestibility during which positive suggestions and guided imagery are used by the hypnotherapist to help individuals deal with a variety of concerns and issues. Being in relaxed state of mind enables you to tap into a deeper part of your own inner wisdom, guided by a hypnotherapist, so you can more easily and effectively create the changes you desire in your life.

How does it work?

Hypnotherapy works by tapping into your subconscious mind to reprogram beliefs, thought processes and behaviours that are keeping you stuck.

During hypnosis, the body and conscious mind are in a relaxed, natural state (known as trance), while the subconscious mind remains awake and receptive to suggestion.

Once in a comfortable position, I will guide you into a hypnotic trance where I will communicate directly with your subconscious and offer new perspectives, ideas and messages.

This process results in you adopting more positive and productive ways of thinking, reacting and behaving. After a number of sessions, you will subconsciously adopt the new habits and behaviours that you desire.

What can I expect from my hypnotherapy sessions?

In our initial session, we’ll get to know each other and I’ll ask you questions to understand the core issues you’d like to work on and your future goals. I’ll also explain what hypnosis is, how it can help you, and address any myths or concerns you may have about it. Unlike traditional therapy, we won’t spend hours talking about your past or the “why” behind your problems. We’ll focus on where you are now and where you want to be in the future.

During hypnosis, I’ll guide you into a relaxed trance where I’ll offer different ideas and suggestions to your subconscious mind. Although your eyes will be closed, you’ll be awake and focused on my voice, allowing your mind and body to completely relax.

Each hypnotherapy session includes hypnotic suggestions and other techniques customised to address your specific needs and desires for change. Sessions will always end with me guiding you into hypnosis. This is a very relaxing process where you are not really “thinking” in the traditional sense, you are “experiencing” without questioning, without critical judgment or analysis. You will be aware of your environment and the things I am saying, you will be able to move and adjust at any time.

Is hypnosis safe?

Hypnosis is simply a gentle, relaxed state of focus and is perfectly safe. You will not say or do anything during hypnosis that you don’t want to do consciously as your unconscious mind will not accept suggestions that conflict with your beliefs, morals, or desires. You will be fully in control and aware of everything that’s going on the whole time.  You will be gently guided into a deep comfortable level of relaxation and given beneficial suggestions that move you toward your goal.

You cannot get ‘stuck’ in a hypnotic trance state, you may drift off to sleep but you will wake feeling alert and refreshed.

How many sessions will I need?

Everyone is different so naturally results and the time it takes to achieve them will vary from client to client. Some client’s experience huge shifts after one session. However, a minimum of 3-4 sessions are recommended to create significant, long-lasting change. Hypnotherapy is a personal journey and each issue is unique, so we assess and modify as we go.

Can everyone be hypnotised?

Almost anyone willing and able to follow simple instructions can enter a hypnotic state.

There are certain contraindications that could mean hypnotherapy is not a suitable treatment, or that you should seek advice from your GP before undergoing a course of hypnotherapy.  This is one of the reasons we have an initial chat, to decide whether hypnotherapy is the right therapy for you.
